Training to become a seaman can be an exciting preposition. Working on a boat or ship however requires certain specialist skills, especially if one's plan is to be involved in the actual maneuvering of the vessel. Enrolling in a good college that offers the appropriate sailing courses is therefore the first step towards achieving these skills.
Working on a sea vessel is a very technical and hands on experience. This is especially so if one hopes to become a day skipper. By definition, a this seaman is an individual mandated to be in charge of a sea vessel but within certain parameters or codes of practice. The RYA courses prepare one for this role.
The day skipper courses are hands on and this means there is very little opportunity to teach the student any elaborate navigation or seamanship skills. To this end, the MCA has put in place certain requirements for these seamen within which they must always operate.
Some of the codes of practice enforced by the MCA include the maximum size of vessel and distance from the nominated point of departure of the vessel. There are also other aspects of this course that differentiate between training for tidal and non tidal waters, time of day, weather, etc.
Sailing courses offered by the rya are recognized the world over and present a unique opportunity for aspiring seamen to learn the necessary skills and begin a career in the field. Taking up RYA courses is the first and best step towards achieving ones dream of sailing.
